YouTube is testing a floating ‘Play something’ button

YouTube is testing a new feature called the "Play something" button, which is similar to Google's "I'm feeling lucky" button.

YouTube is experimenting with a novel “Play Something” button within its Android app, as revealed by 9to5Google. This innovative button hovers above the app’s bottom bar, and with a single tap, it selects and plays a YouTube video for you.

Similar to previous iterations of this feature, the new button reportedly employs the portrait-oriented YouTube Shorts player to display videos, irrespective of whether they are vertically formatted Shorts or standard YouTube videos. It is hoped that this limitation will be addressed before a wider rollout.

Over the past year, YouTube has explored various incarnations of this feature, including a “Play Something” banner and a minimalist button resembling a black-and-white YouTube logo. The name of this feature might sound familiar as Netflix discontinued a comparable random video selector last year called “Surprise Me,” which initially debuted in 2021 under the name “Play Something.”
